The future of a country always resides on the shoulders of young men and women. The student community plays a pivotal role in shaping the destiny of a country. Dr. V.KR.V. Rao the then Minister for Education Government of India established National Service Scheme in the year 1969 to mark the birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi to train students to the social service, National Service Scheme is sponsored by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India, financed both by the centre and state governments implemented by the colleges through the Universities. The scheme was introduced in the college during the year 1978, India is a country of villages. To understand India, one should have knowledge of rural life. It was the dream of Gandhiji to involve the student community for the service of the rural India. The student's youth should understand the problems faced by villagers and try to understand them and help them educate, to lead a better, healthy life. Interaction is necessary between the youth and the villagers. The youth have tremendous energy, intelligence and enthusiasm. The aim of the NSS is to channelise the energy and hidden talent of the students for the constructive work NSS develops service mentality, discipline, leadership qualities, co-operation, fraternity secularism, unity and integrity responsibility among students. The students learn by self-experience.
Objectives
(1) The all-round development of personality of the students t make them responsible citizens of the country responsible citizens of the country.
(2) The development of the rural India by social service rendered by the students. The students take active participation in nation building programmes like Adult Literacy programme, AIDS awareness programme, afforestation programme etc.

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It provides opportunity to the student youth of 11th & 12th Class of schools at +2 Board level and student youth of Technical Institution, Graduate & Post Graduate at colleges and University level of India to take part in various government led community service activities &programmes.The sole aim of the NSS is to provide hands on experience to young students in delivering community service. Since inception of the NSS in the year 1969, the number of students strength increased from 40,000 to over 3.8 million up to the end of March 2018 students in various universities, colleges and Institutions of higher learning have volunteered to take part in various community service programmes.

All the youth volunteers who opt to serve the nation through the NSS led community service wear the NSS badge with pride and a sense of responsibility towards helping needy. The Konark wheel in the NSS badge having 8 bars signifies the 24 hours of a the day, reminding the wearer to be ready for the service of the nation round the clock i.e. for 24 hours. Red colour in the badge signifies energy and spirit displayed by the NSS volunteers. The Blue colour signifies the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.

The NSS motto "Not Me but You" represents the spirit of democratic living and emphasizes the need for selfless service. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports oversees the National Service Scheme, which is a public service programme.

  1. To understand the community in which they work.
  2. To understand themselves in relation to their community.
  3. Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process.
  4. Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility.
  5. Utilize their knowledge in generating practical solution to individual and community problems.
  6. Develop competence required for a group living and sharing of responsibilities.
  7. Gain skills in mobilizing community participation.
  8. Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude.
  9. Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters.
  10. To extend the national integration and social harmony.

Our college NSS Unit was opened in the year 1978. Our unit has made outstanding achievements and has to its credit of organizing many University Level and District Level leadership camps in the adopted villages. The details are given at the end. At present there are two NSS units of 100 volunteers cach in the institution, Prof RN.Simpi and Prof D.I. Jecrankalags are the NSS Programme officers. The activities, of the scheme start with the selection of volunteers in the beginning of the year. The volunteers are informed about the aims and objectives of NSS. The regular activities like cleaning of the campus repair of play ground, tree plantation and watering, sanitation, repair of roads are done on Sundays.
Our college has two N.S.S units. Naming ‘A’ Unit and ‘B’ Unit. Each N.S.S unit having 100 N.S.S volunteers. Every year college has been conducting various Shramadana activities. Some of these are:
1. Tree Plantatio
2. Aids awareness Ralliers
3. Puls polio
4. Sadbhavana Rally
5. Blood group check-up and Blood donation in local hospital
6. Sramadhana in campus
7. Anti-Tobacco awareness and other service activities.
8. Street rally
9. prohibition of drugs and awareness activities
10. traffic rules awareness activities
Apart from these, college has also been indulged in organizing various lecturing sessions. Some of them are:
1. NSS Day
2. Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti
3. One nation One India (Constitution day)
4. Health awareness session
5. Women empowerment
6. Society and harassment related

NSS volunteer who takes part in the community service programme would either be a college level or a senior secondary level student. Being an active member these student volunteers would have the exposure and experience to be the following:
1. an accomplished social leader.
2. an efficient administrator.
3. a person who understands human nature.
